| As you drive in, there is a winding gravel road, level but with a few sharp corners. Drive slowly and beware of oncoming traffic. This leads on to the carpark and facilities. There is a basic shelter and picnic area big enough for family cricket, with barbecue and five or six picnic tables. There are public toilets. From the carpark there are two trails. If you leave on one you have the option to return via the other, as the parks pathway system runs in a figure of eight design. If you take the path from the picnic area, this will take you over the bridge over the Monbulk Creek, which feeds the lake system. There are NO TROLLS under this or any of the bridges in the park, in case you were wondering. We have this on the authority of Billy Goat Gruff, who apparently works for the parks department. There are many opportunities for animal spotting. There are ducks and geese to feed, wild birds, and the lakes are stocked with big fishies, but im not sure if these are carp. There are Platypus in the Upper Monbulk Creek in the Dandenongs, so it might be possible to see these one day. We have seen turtles, and lizards, plus other species of lakeside dwellers, such as mountain bikers, joggers and fishermen. Don’t try to feed the mountain bikers or the joggers. On the way past the farms adjoining the reserve there are horsies too! Please note this is before the bushfires in Upwey. These fires started in Birdsland. The park is now open and it is green again but things are still not quite the same. | ||||||

| About a five minute drive from Upwey on Dorset Road is the Tim Neville Aboretum. In fact five minutes from Ferntree Gully, Boronia, Knox and Scoresby too. Flanked by the impressive backdrop of the Dandenong Ranges this pretty lakeside park is popular. From a family point of view there is a lot to offer, from a myriad of paved and gravel pathways twisting and turning amongst the trees and gardens. Perfect to tire little darlings out running amok!. There are boardwalks and shelters abutting landscaped rose gardens, a lovely pergola next to one of the two barbecue areas, while the second barbecue area has more picnic tables next to the adventure playground. Four slides including one into a sand pit and another corkscrew slide, multiple swings and the whole thing is built like a fort out of logs. The playground is in a fenced area with child safe gates but with water around, supervision is essential. | ||||||

| Lilydale Lake Park FREE Pictures of Lillydale Lake Playground | ||||||
| The park is centred around a large man made lake and wetlands, and is adjacent to an old tram line which now forms part of the path network. The tram line used to service a milling operation. The ruins of the mill can still be seen at one end of the dam. There are several small white sand beaches ideal for sunbaking or swimming in summer. Dogs are prohibited on the beaches however. These are adjacent to a large barbecue/picnic complex with numerous shelters and tables complete with one of the best adventure and activity playgrounds. In summer you will generally find an ice cream van in the car park doing a good trade. Another of the features of Lilydale Lake is the walking and cycle track network. From either of the car parks and also accessible from several side roads it circuits the lake, with side branches along Olinda Creek and to the town centre of Lilydale. It is mostly flat with some gentle hills and is well formed. Ideal for all ages, and popular with walkers, cyclists, joggers and mums and dads. Distance is about 4 kms or more depending on your choice of path. There are two generous off lead areas for the dogs, and these are well separated from areas used by most other park visitors. One is near the main car park while the other is on the low side of the dam wall at the North End. This are has the added bonus of being next to the river, which is big enough for a bit of a splash in summer. This would have to be perhaps the Shire Of Yarra Ranges best off lead location. Care is advised however as bordering the off lead areas are two wetland bird sanctuaries. | ||||||
